Classic American Cheeseburger with Homemade Thousand Island Dressing

Classic American Cheeseburger

History:

“Also, you know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in Paris?” Call it whatever you like, wherever you are “The Royal with cheese,” “Le Big Mac” or just a good burger, this is a staple of Americana cuisine. There is debate about the origins of this icon which can be dated to the 19th or early 20th Century as to whether the burger was created in the US or in Hamburg Germany. The burger as we know it with all the toppings almost certainly was started in America and the meal became an affordable and portable option for the rapidly industrializing USA.

Burger Ingredients:

1 lb Ground Chuck

¼ minced yellow onion

2 garlic cloves minced

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp mayo

1 egg yolk

1 tsp parsley

Deli burger buns

Slice of white cheddar cheese

Tomatoe on the vine sliced

Romaine Lettuce Leaf

Salt and Pepper to taste

Dressing Ingredients:

2 tbs ketchup

2 tbs mayo

1 tbs pickle juice

1 tbs minced onion

Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions:

Measure out roughly how large you want each burger patty to be. In a bowl, add the patties, minced garlic and onion, Worcestershire sauce, mayo, parsley, egg yolk, and salt and pepper and combine with your hands (you can use a pair of gloves if raw meat isn’t your thing!) The mayo and yolk are a binder for the burger to that it will not fall apart as well as keep it moist!

Bring you olive oil up to a high heat in your pan (make sure it isn’t smoking, that means its too hot!) Place your burgers in the pan and cook roughly 4-5 minutes per side depending on how well you want the burger to cook. Flip the burger (the outside of it should be crispy and brown). When you flip your burger, make sure to baste the burger with the hot oil to keep the top half cooking! In the last minute, add the cheese on top and cover so the cheese melts. Take the burger off the heat and place it on a paper towel to soak up all the oil (you don’t want to skip this step, or you will have an oily burger! YUCK)

In the same pan, toast your buns (this will make the buns crisp and flavorful because they will absorb all the flavor in the pan).

For the dressing, combine the ketchup, mayo, pickle juice, minced onion, salt, and pepper.

To build the burger, place your buns face up, add the dressing to the bottom half of the bun, add the burger, tomato slice, and the lettuce. ENJOY!
